We were recently gifted this painting by my mother who, after a long period of abstention, has finally lifted a paintbrush again. Jolene and I were delighted to receive it, not least of all since it’s a painting of our (and our neighbours) house, it’s based on a photo from a couple of years back and features one of my nephews a long with our wee lad and lass. Of course, all we need to do now is find somewhere to hang it which, given the state of disrepair our home is currently in is easier said than done!!

Typically, the photograph has washed the colours out and no amount of fiddling in the photo editor, with my limited skills, was going to fix that I’m afraid. Still it was a lovely gesture and Jolene and I will be delighted to hang it … just as soon as we have somewhere to hang it!!

Hmm…wonder what these are

If I turn my back will they move?

Nope…but they did get shinier…you saw that, right?
Oh well, best be on my way now.

You’ll need:
printer
paper
sharp needle
sharp scissors
6″ x 4″ piece of felt
36″ of 6 stranded embroidery thread
stuffing
Stitches used:
Blanket
Lazy Daisy
Instructions:
- Click on the pattern below and print and cut it out. It’s sized to A4 so you’ll need to make sure your page size is set to 210mm x 297mm so that the picture doesn’t distort.
- Pin the template to your felt and cut two bird shapes. You may find it easier to do this one shape at a time.
- Separate two strands of thread by holding one end of the strand and gently pulling it from the group.
- Using lazy daisy stitch, Sew three small flowers on each bird shape around about the belly of the bird. Pay close attention to make sure you stitch on the right side of the bird shapes.
- Separate another two strands of thread. Using blanket stitch sew the two bird shapes together starting at the mid back and leaving about an inch of a gap for stuffing.
- Stuff the bird quite tightly and sew the gap closed (with blanket stitch). You might find at this stage a pencil or chopstick is useful for getting the stuffing into the corners but be careful you don’t poke it all the way through! Secure your thread with a few small stitches.
- Thread the last two strands through your needle and double them up to give you four strands. Starting on the back of the bird, roughly where you started the blanket stitch, sew a few small stitches to secure your thread and then create a loop. Sew some more small stitches to secure the loop.
- If you wish you can sew a few loops onto the tail end of the bird to resemble feathers.
- Hang from your tree/door handle/peg and marvel at the cuteness.
Pattern:

The copyright of this work belongs to MadeStuff. You may use this pattern to create as many ornaments as you wish for your own personal use and to give as gifts. You may not use this pattern in any shape or form for commercial gain.
If you can’t be bothered going out to buy the materials you’ll need to make this lovely bird ornament, I have some kits for sale in the shop. The kits contain the pattern, including instructions for the stitches, thread, felt and stuffing…enough for one ornament.

This will probably be the final batch of plant pokes until after Christmas as ‘other priorities’ take over … also, the workshop gets hellish cold at this time of year due to gaping gaps under the doors and roof which may as well not be there when the cold winter gales get going!

As ever these were made using the power carver, actually my new power carver following the untimely demise of my last one. I went for a different model and whilst it doesn’t have the same grunt as it’s predecessor it’s actually not too bad once you get used to it’s foibles! Next time I may need to invest in one of the heavier duty motors.
There’s a good chance that I’ll be putting the power carver to greater use in the future for larger carvings, currently I exclusively use traditional hand tools for these but the amount of time this takes just even from a roughing out point-of-view can be excruciating … time will tell. Still at least the traditional tools can be used in the house … by the fire!

Jolene’s been busy with her needle and thread, pulling up her socks, and putting together some more of her cute and cuddly creatures. Stripes seem to be a recurring theme, but the first cuddly creature featured here is a luxurious little soul made out of angora …

As much as I love the soft autumnal colours in the angora creature above, the vibrant summery colours of the creature below are also rather fab. We had pretty much decided that this one had something a pig-tailed school girl about it, but now I look at the pictures here I can’t help thinking it looks more like the irritated mother of a naughty school girl, hands on hips!

Meanwhile, I’ve also been finishing off my second and, I promise you, final sock creature … it’s no great work of art, but it’s definitely got character!

I’ve been meaning to make these for an age and whilst the inspiration is very much borne of the spring time the design is based on an earlier bowl I made way back when, here.
I don’t know about you, but as we prepare to plunge into the depths of winter (haven’t we already plunged?) it seems like a remarkably good idea to do everything we can to remind ourselves that the long dark nights and the miserable weather only last until spring … actually the weather never really improves beyond getting a mite warmer, it does at least get lighter though!

This is the second set of bowls I’ve made along the mushroom lines, of course mushrooms don’t traditionally come in shades of blue, but then traditionally bowls don’t come in the form of mushrooms. I have been keen to experiment with colour and whilst I was initially sceptical about making these blue they are beginning to grow on me … not that I have some sort of fungal infection you understand, it’s just that I’m coming to like the bowls!
These bowls are made on the same moulds as the previous set, and despite this you can readily see that the bowls themselves are rather different from one another not only in colour but also in shape and weight. The bowls shown here have a much lighter or finer finish to them than their predecessors, although each is as robust as the other, I was mildly concerned that the blue bowls would be rather flimsy so I was pleased to discover that the finish I use gives a rigidity to the edges that you might not otherwise expect.

I have one final set of these in the pipeline, in fact, I’ve already removed them from their moulds and the moulds are no more.

Jolene has been experimenting with some different fabric for her felt finches and come up with these wee charmers. On the one hand we have a wee tartan or light tweed fellow and on the other we have an adorable little fluff ball, incredibly soft to the touch made out of a deep polar fleece.

Very cute I’m sure you’ll agree!

I’ve developed a real joy out of making these little characters, generally I’ll closet myself away in the workshop, put on some Razorlight and get into a general carving frenzy.
This batch were made using some of the last remains of the silver fir and elm, although I do have some european larch, Birch and Ash waiting in the wings for when the mood next takes me.
Here are a few group photos for your pleasure:

As much as I’d love to upload these to the shop we’re continuing to stock up for a glut of craft fayre’s in the run up to Christmas, our main event will be in Dundee with a couple of smaller events more locally. Details will follow in due course anyway.

Over the past few weeks I have been busy with a couple of commissions and finalising a new idea for Christmas tree decorations. I’m reserving the commissions for a post of their own because they took me so long that they deserve a gold plaque, never mind their own post!
I know it seems too early to be talking about Christmas but it will be here before we know it and last year it totally caught me off guard so, like all good girl guides, this year I’m being prepared…besides we have a mega craft fair two weeks before Christmas and we don’t want to be embarrassed by a lack of stock.

The christmas tree decorations started life months ago now as a rough idea for bodies and I’ve had these embroidered bodies lying around in my sewing box all summer. With the closing in nights it was time to finish the job. They are now a mixture of felt bodies and polymer clay heads, hands and feet. I think the picture speaks for itself.

At this stage I have 18 of these delightful little girls. Each one is different. I just need to think of a name.
