Jolene’s been busy laying about with her feet up, well, in fairness she’s been resting her ankle following an operation to remove the steel work that was put in when she broke it a few years ago. She hasn’t been entirely idle though, she was commissioned at the Morningside Makers Market to customise a pair of Christmas stockings for a lady who was going to New Zealand to visit her grand-children over the festive period.

It was all a bit last minute, but Jolene relined the stocking uppers to the customers specifications and embroidered ‘Daisy’ and ‘Hamish’ onto the top before despatching them, post haste.

Things were slightly held-up as the customer wished to pay be cheque and we had to wait until we received it before despatching the items, typically we wait for cheques to clear before dispatch, and encourage shoppers to use paypal for payment, particularly if they are in a hurry.

Over the weekend I was fortunate enough to come across a lengthy piece of blue (what we think is fake) suede in the fabric shop. It was screaming out to me to make some birds…so I did.

It was kind of difficult to sew with. I kept feeling as though the needle hole would tear, but when I came to stuff it turns out that fabric is really hard wearing and the resulting bird has a really nice soft appearance and feel.

I also tried something different with the legs and they have held in position really well, while being a lot easier to get in place. The eye is sewn on this one rather than being a bead…just because I couldn’t be bothered to find my pot of seed beads!

The stitching on these is with darning wool rather than embroidery floss.

And, the underside is the opposite side of the blue suede effect. Still lovely and soft though.

Available in the shop

I think I may be becoming a fanatic, well, maybe not quite; although I did find myself outside in the rain this morning pulling weeds and re-arranging pots!? The garden really has quite a lure to me, being confined to quarters over the winter and suffering a wee bit with cabin fever really makes you appreciate being able to get outside … of course, being fortunate enough to live in a beautiful part of the country helps too!

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been making the most of the good weather doing some chores in the garden, like installing an outside tap (I hate plumbing with a passion) and building a retaining wall – amongst other odds and ends.

I don’t have a good history with plumbing projects going back to a project when we first moved into our current house when a plan to replace the element in the immersion tank took around 4-5 days and ended up with me having to remove and replace the entire tank, then there’s been the radiators and pipes that have burst and the cursing that occurs whenever a newly jointed pipe turns out to not be water tight … seriously, you have no idea!

Fortunately I had no such problems with the plumbing this time around … maybe I’m getting better at it. The wall took a little longer than I had anticipated and massively more mortar than I’d have imagined was possible, it looks like it’s about to fall over in the picture but that’s as a result of some, er, clever photography. Maybe I should find a clever photographer to explain it!

As luck would have it though the garden has some wee gems in it at the moment, and as I mentioned earlier the area we live in is beautiful. It all helps to lower my blood pressure. Here are a few samples of what’s going on in the garden just now:

You may notice that the currants feature twice, we’re fortunate enough to have quite a few and I’ve discovered this year that they’re easily propagated, something I’m hoping to do more of once the polytunnel has arrived and been assembled. I’m not sure if it’s something we’ve mentioned on here previously but we decided to invest in large (14′ x 30′) poly-tunnel as our site is extremely exposed which can make growing much of anything extremely difficult. More on that at a later date though.

Here are a few examples of what I’ve come up with thus far, the first is my favourite of the the three and the last (zig-zag) is based on a design suggested by our wee lad:

As ever, these items are available for sale in our shop.

I’ve been watching Jolene create her fabric finches for months now, I suppose it was inevitable that I would end up taking some inspiration from them and feeding it into what I’m doing myself … indeed, Jolene alluded to as much here. The WIP previews she gave there though have long since been finished, and discarded on the basis that they were, well, rubbish!

I’m rather proud of the these ones though, the refined and finished product if you will. Being me, they’re predominantly papier mache with a bit of wire and armature thrown in for good measure before being finished in acrylics and a tough high gloss varnish.

The design is based on some rather fabulous silk that Jolene bought from a seller in India for another project that she’s working on, also from discussions with Jolene about Paisley pattern – a very simplified tear drop has been adopted for the wings here – and I’ve also been listening to some Deva Premal which has no doubt fed in to the general feel of the pieces … although I’ve no idea where she’s from!?!

OK, google sorted out the latter one there … she’s from Germany and wiki says:

is a musician known for her meditative spiritual New Age music, which puts ancient Hindu mantras into atmospheric, contemporary settings.

Am I becoming an old hippy? Actually never-mind, people were accusing me of being an old hippy before I was even 20 … actually I think the term they used was “weirdo”!!

These Bonnie Birds are available to purchase in out Coriandr shop.

In all honesty I was never satisfied with the bowls, despite the compliments (thanks!), and when I brought them out at one of our recent craft fayres I was compelled to immediately re-wrap them and return them to the crate from whence they came!

With everything that’s been going on of late I struggled to get them finished, but the final coat of varnish is dry and we even managed a wee drop of winter sunshine to get some piccies taken … sunshine makes me happy! Anyway, here are the bowls:

This is the second set of bowls I’ve made along the mushroom lines, of course mushrooms don’t traditionally come in shades of blue, but then traditionally bowls don’t come in the form of mushrooms. I have been keen to experiment with colour and whilst I was initially sceptical about making these blue they are beginning to grow on me … not that I have some sort of fungal infection you understand, it’s just that I’m coming to like the bowls!

These bowls are made on the same moulds as the previous set, and despite this you can readily see that the bowls themselves are rather different from one another not only in colour but also in shape and weight. The bowls shown here have a much lighter or finer finish to them than their predecessors, although each is as robust as the other, I was mildly concerned that the blue bowls would be rather flimsy so I was pleased to discover that the finish I use gives a rigidity to the edges that you might not otherwise expect.

I have one final set of these in the pipeline, in fact, I’ve already removed them from their moulds and the moulds are no more.

Well, the demonic papier mache sculpture is here … finally!

Gravalsh, a small and relatively friendly little demon intent on world domination, or failing that bringing about an apocalypse. Happily, he’s too small and of lowly intellect so the odds of achieving either of these goals are rather limited.

He does however excel at looking surprised by any number of innocuous and otherwise unsurprising events, most usually his failed attempts to escape from high shelves this, generally proves to be the first and most difficult hurdle to his erstwhile schemes.

Below you can see one of the rare occasions he escaped from his shelf and made it as far as the garden, fortunately his schemes were foiled by large wavy green things that erupted from the ground and prevented him making a nuisance of himself … yes big thanks to the season of spring, daffodils and a light breeze!

Gravalash has been securely locked up in a brilliant white padded cell until we can find a secure unit for him, personally I think he just needs a loving home and some positive influences in his life, something that’s been sadly lacking in his life to date!?

Available for sale in our etsy shop
