Sock creatures, a monstrous diversion!

Sewing is really Jolene’s thing, obviously I’m far more interested in manly arts and crafts rather than these silly women’s past-times!  Obviously I jest, but sewing isn’t really what I do … other than from a utilitarian stand-point it’s not a craft I’ve ever felt the need to refine, alas, with time to kill and the workshop outside getting colder and colder as winter sets in I was persuaded to have a go at making a sock creature or two.

This is my first effort, and whilst I don’t think it’s a complete failure …

… I can’t help thinking that she looks like a bit of an old slapper!

We’ll be selling Jolene’s ones at our forth-coming craft fayres, we’ll announce dates shortly.

Sock Creatures

These fun chaps were supposed to be sock monsters but they just aren’t at all scary.  In fact, they are so cute it hurts me to look at them so I think they must be banished to the sock drawer from wence they came!  (They didn’t really, they are brand new non-smelly socks).

This is something of a brand new obsession for me and I can’t seem to stop making them, which is unfortunate because I should really be making up a stock of birds for the upcoming craft fairs.  There are so many possibilities and since making these two at the start of the week, I’ve made a further two that are entirely different despite being fashioned from the other sock in each of the pairs.  It’s so much fun seeing your creation come to life, it’s a bit addictive.

This happy chap is known to his other sock friends as Ben the Bovine.  His peculiarly dimpled lips make him look somewhat like a cow and he is teased daily for this unfortunate feature.  In reality he is a sheep (or at least that’s what our three year old thinks) and he needs a loving home where he can be supported in the pursuit of baa-ing.

Sergeant Slim here at your service…stiff upper lip and no messing around.  See the thin yet ever so carefully crafted moustache?  He spends hours every morning grooming his facial hair.  Those who know him better, see a twinkle in his eye though and we all know that when no-one’s looking he’s as batty as the rest of the sock creatures.

These and the other sock creatures I create will be on sale at the craft fairs we’re attending this winter…details soon.

Individually carved plant pokes

I’ve finally completed a new set of plant pot ornaments (plant pokes), extending the range to include a smaller variety of ‘wood sprites’ measuring between 3″ – 4″ tall as well as the usual range measuring between 6″ – 8″ in height.

These particular plant pokes have been carved in either silver fir or elm (the majority being the fir), before being treated with oil to preserve them against decay in moist plant pots and finally having their uppers finished in a tough varnish.

As ever every piece is an individual with it’s own character, everyone has their favourites and every sprite will shortly be looking for a new home. These sprites have been specifically created for a forthcoming event, details of which will be given nearer the time, although if you’re particularly keen to re-home one of the wee souls drop me an e-mail using the contact details on the contact page.

The items in the uppermost image are priced at £6.50 / each, whilst their larger counterpartsin the lower image are £8.50 (incl. postage and packing).

Commissions – mobile phone cosy

As promised here are the two mobile phone cosies I made for a commission.

I’m not sure which was more challenging – embroidery on black fabric or getting a semi-decent photograph of it.

Hopefully, you can just about see the matryoshka doll embroidery on this one.  The fabric is red wool.

I just couldn’t get a good enough individual picture of the dragon on the black fabric.  Any photography tips would really be appreciated.

These phone cosies are not available for sale but I will be making a range of iPhone and Blackberry cases for the Christmas Craft Fairs we are attending…more on that later.

Handmade Christmas Tree Decorations

Over the past few weeks I have been busy with a couple of commissions and finalising a new idea for Christmas tree decorations.  I’m reserving the commissions for a post of their own because they took me so long that they deserve a gold plaque, never mind their own post!

I know it seems too early to be talking about Christmas but it will be here before we know it and last year it totally caught me off guard so, like all good girl guides, this year I’m being prepared…besides we have a mega craft fair two weeks before Christmas and we don’t want to be embarrassed by a lack of stock.

christmas_tree_decoration_handmade

The christmas tree decorations started life months ago now as a rough idea for bodies and I’ve had these embroidered bodies lying around in my sewing box all summer.  With the closing in nights it was time to finish the job.  They are now a mixture of felt bodies and polymer clay heads, hands and feet.  I think the picture speaks for itself.

At this stage I have 18 of these delightful little girls.  Each one is different.  I just need to think of a name.

a flock of felt birds

I’ve been going through some of the things that we made for the last craft fayre and came across these gorgeous felt birds that Jolene made over the space of a few days when we realised that our stock on some fronts was limited and that some of that limited stock was being snapped up in advance of the fayre.

I’ll be uploading some of the other items that we made for the craft fayre over the next few weeks, in the meantime, I’ve uploaded these ones to the shop.

our first craft fayre

It’s been a long weekend with our inaugural craft fayre taking place over a two day period which saw blazing sunshine on the first day, when we were indoors, and torrential rain and gale force winds on the second day when we were supposed to be out-of-doors, but ended up in … I guess this is what happens when the marquee intended to house the event ends up at two different ends of the village.

Sadly the ‘mini-gathering’ being held as part of Scotland’s year of Homecoming was something of a wash-out and as a result foot-fall was appallingly low, still I think we learned some sound lessons for any future fayre’s that we do.  Not least of all that we can at least fill a table and make some sales!

ms_stall

Despite the low turnout (it was really really bad!) we still managed to sell enough items to make it worthwhile including one ‘big-ticket’ item and a variety of bits and pieces including pendants, brooches, a few plant pokes, greetings cards, mounted art photo’s and a couple of framed photo’s.  All-in-all we made back pretty much what we out-laid on putting together our not insubstantial stock, which I think is fairly positive.

Anyway big thanks to those who turned out to support us, the other crafters and store holders who were tremendously complimentary of our work, giving us some very welcome feedback and tips, and also a big hand to Jolene who (practically) single-handedly looked after the stall while I looked after the kids.

Oh!  Now that the event’s out of the way we’ll be adding some of the surplus stock to our shop over the next few days so keep an eye out for that if you’re interested.
