another “One Million Giraffes”
Jolene found this project back at the beginning of July and duly penned her contribution to Ola’s attempt to get 1,000,000 handmade giraffes. The only stipulation for the giraffe’s is that they must not be made on a computer … although I wonder if you could make one out of a computer?! Anyway Jolene talks a bit more about all that in her post, here, and to that end I’m content to let her talk.
My own effort is clearly life-size, although I regret that I didn’t have a large enough canvas to paint the whole thing! Aside from that though it was a good excuse to break out the oils I’ve been itching to experiment with since I bought them a few weeks ago … maybe I’ll publish another picture when the paint actually dries!!
Still, I think it was a good exercise and I think I learned a couple of things about oil paints, not least of all that it doesn’t wash off your hands as easily as acrylics or water colours. Certainly I did enjoy using them though.
Ola’s giraffe collection can be found here: http://olahelland.net/giraffes/ … go on, add your own :)

Oil paints normally have the consistency of soft butter. What makes this color combination great, is that it is using a different base color of cream. Did you keep your oil paint thick and creamy throughout the process?

Hi Pedro, thanks for the feeback! I essentially used the paints straight from the tube and didn’t thin them at all, I just kept working them until I was [relatively] happy with finish.
