painting … harder than it looks!

If I’m being honest painting isn’t something I have much of a talent for, what is easy is looking at paintings done by creative and talented artists (don’t you just hate them!) and think, gosh! I could do that!  Of course the truth is that without a huge amount of practice or heaps of natural talent it’s probably unlikely that many of us will ever be considered as good as those who have attained the label of ‘great master’ or are even simply capable of making a living from what they do.

For me though, that’s not a huge issue.  I’m not trying to create something of which people will be in awe of … although it would be nice, no, I actually find the act of painting to be very therapeutic.  Just putting the paint on the paper/canvas/card and seeing what happens while the computer plays some random tracks from my music collection in the background can be incredibly relaxing.

Below are a few of the paintings that I’ve done in the last few months, the ones I don’t mind people seeing or commenting on.

As you can see from these I prefer to do something a bit more abstract, I’m never satisfied when I attempt to paint or draw an image which is supposed to have a likeness to something in reality.  The likeness is never close enough for me and for that reason alone I prefer the abstract or the grotesque, I certainly have much admiration for those who can produce still life or figures and animals and the like … although, generally, I prefer to look at abstracts.
