Wood carving generally involves a lot of that, dead wood, but when you add a pipe … well, you know, smoking kills.
This is probably one of the quickest carvings I’ve done and incorporates much of what I was toying with in my last post, namely the eyes, which I’m now satisfied do not satisfy me … even had they been done with more care I prefer some sort of spherical suggestion that I just don’t think can be achieved with this style.
The pipe arises largely due to a convienantly placed knot in the ‘bearded’ area and is something I’ve used previously in Dead Wood, which can be found on my deviantart.com art blog where I go by the screen name Goji-Berry … don’t ask!

Wow! How long did he take you to do?
I’m never really sure how long it takes me to do anything, if I’m being honest. I’m too much one for picking things up and putting them down again, although, if I’m hit with an unusually large dose of motivation then I can quite happily sit and carve until either my fingers and hands start hurting or until I’m done! Looking at this now I reckon it shouldn’t have taken any more than a few hours of actual carving with a bit extra either side for initially mulling over what the wood wants to be and then later for sanding/smoothing and finally varnishing. I normally give them a few coats of varnish which is what normally takes the most time simply to allow it to dry between coats (approx. 6 hours between coats).
